In Vietnam, Minh Phu Seafood Corp., one of the largest seafood exporters, said that plastic packaging costs have risen about 50% since the outbreak of hostilities. For export companies, packaging is not just an ancillary cost but a necessity for goods to meet international market standards. When this cost rises rapidly, profit margins narrow significantly.

Notably, Minh Phu is still trying to absorb most of the new cost itself to avoid immediately impacting customers. However, this is only a temporary measure. As the company's capacity to absorb costs is exhausted, price adjustments become almost inevitable.

Similarly, in Malaysia, Farm Fresh Bhd. has been forced to raise prices on some dairy products, the first adjustment since 2023. In 17 years of operation, the company is facing such a severe packaging supply disruption for the first time, forcing it to seek alternative materials and even switch to smaller cartons.

According to the company representative, its plastic bottle suppliers all rely on HDPE plastic producers, whose naphtha feedstock comes from the Middle East. In other words, a shock in the Middle East can directly affect milk shelves in supermarkets in Kuala Lumpur or Jakarta. This is the depth of interconnection in the modern economy: the price stability of one country now depends on geopolitical changes thousands of kilometers away.

Impact across the region

The pressure is felt not only by dairy or seafood processors but also by many other industries. Japan and South Korea, major naphtha importers, are forced to increase purchases from alternative sources to make up for supply gaps. But switching to other import sources is not cheap. The higher costs from alternative supplies will eventually be passed on to regional producers.

In Malaysia, a plastic container producer said prices for some products have been raised by up to 20%. In Japan, the country's largest egg carton supplier also said it has raised prices this month as it must maintain supply while raw material costs are at "levels unimaginable under normal circumstances."

Thailand is also under significant pressure. According to the country's rice packaging association, packaging costs have risen by up to 40%, putting enormous strain on the rice industry, a key pillar of agricultural exports. The association president said many packaging companies are trying to "swallow" the price increase, but no one knows how long they can hold out. Profit margins are thinning, and maintaining original prices is just delaying, not solving the problem.

Agriculture not immune either

This packaging shock affects not only processing plants but also directly impacts farmers. In northeastern Australia, Daintree Fresh exported about 200,000 boxes of melons to Japan last year. The company said it is now facing rising costs for plastic film used to control weeds, along with increasing fuel and fertilizer prices.

Paradoxically, demand from Japan remains strong, but high production costs force the company to scale back planting plans.
